pet sterilization days

Several local administrations and animal welfare entities have launched free sterilization days for dogs and cats, with specific agendas, defined locations and limited capacity. These campaigns seek to reduce the overpopulation, prevent abandonment and improve pet health through safe and rapid recovery procedures.

Although most of the calls collected are developed in Latin American cities, the information is useful for the public in Spain and Europe as a practical guide on requirements, logistics and benefits, given that the objectives and protocols of these municipal actions are extrapolable to other territories.

Requirements, services and results

pet sterilization requirements

Requirements vary slightly by location, but generally animals are required to come in good health, with prior fasting (between 8 and 12 hours depending on the species), clean and free of parasites. In many campaigns, females are excluded heat, pregnant or lactating, although in certain localities females in heat are accepted with evaluation by the veterinary team.

Regarding the transfer, it is requested to take the cats in carrier (never loose) dogs with a collar and leash; potentially dangerous dogs with a muzzle. It is usually recommended to provide a blanket or towel for recovery and remain in place until staff confirms initial postoperative stability.

Some locations incorporate additional services: in Ciudad Juárez, in addition to surgeries, they place identification microchips without prior registration and 4.500 implants have already been reported. Other campaigns, such as those for Zoonosis in Jujuy, include anti-rabies vaccination and awareness on responsible ownership.

In Iztacalco, the criteria include an age of 6 months to 8 years, differentiated fasting (dogs, 12 hours; cats, 8 hours, and no water for the previous 8 hours), bathing three days beforehand without fleas, and adequate transportation. It is recommended to bring a blanket and the materials requested by the organizers.

The evidence of impact is clear: in Yucatán they have been counted 2.934 sterilizations so far this year and 215.011 rabies vaccines administered, with an estimated thousands of litters avoided and a direct benefit for thousands of families. In parallel, reports are minimally invasive procedures and recoveries of 4 to 5 hours, reinforcing the safety of the process.

The shared objectives of all these initiatives are to stabilize the canine and feline population, reduce health risks such as rabies, reduce abandonment and promote neighborhood coexistence. The combination of surgeries, vaccinations and microchip registration reinforces the public health and the responsible identification of companion animals.

For those planning to attend, it is advisable to review the access mode (online registration or without pre-registration), the required documentation or supplies, and the start times, since spaces tend to fill up quickly. This roadmap, although based on Latin American experiences, offers useful guidelines that can be replicated in Spanish and European municipalities with similar realities.
