How to deworm my dog

Bulldog scratching

There's nothing like keeping fleas and ticks away from our dear furry friend, right? In the market you will find four types of antiparasitics, which are the pipettes, sprays, necklaces and tablets that your vet can recommend.

But Which is the best? It will depend largely on the places you go, so I am going to explain how to deworm my dog.

External parasites

Let's start with the ones that are visible to the naked eye, the external parasites. We all know fleas and ticks, but mites can also cause them a lot of discomfort to our dogs. To repel and / or combat them, the administration of sprays, collars or pipettes is recommended.

  • Sprays: they are applied directly to the animal's body, taking great care that the liquid does not come into contact with the eyes, nose, mouth or ears. It is therefore convenient to protect the head when we are going to apply the spray. Otherwise, can be used as many times as necessary.
  • Collars: this type of antiparasitic is placed around your neck as if it were a conventional collar. They are effective for one, three or six months depending on the brand. But you should know that if you have more than one dog, playing with each other could swallow it. If that happened it could cause stomach aches and general discomfort, and would have to be examined by a vet.
  • Pipettes: apply to the back of the neck, just between the head and the back, and applying another 2-3 small doses reaching the base of the tail if it is a large dog. Depending on the brand, they have an effectiveness between 1 and 3 months.

Which one is more recommendable?

The truth is that it depends. From my own experience, living in a rural town and having a garden, I can tell you that pipettes have been more effective for my dogs than collars or spray, because In just 24 hours you know that they will no longer have any external parasites and that they will stay like this for at least one month. Collars or sprays are more recommended for those animals that only go outside to walk, or for those that do not have much contact with other furry ones.

In any case, no antiparasitic should be administered to puppies less than two months old.

Internal parasites

Internal parasites are called wormsand toxocara canis, Diplydium caninum or the glardias. To prevent or eliminate them, you have to go to the vet to examine it and give us the most appropriate treatment, which can be syrups o tablets.

As these animals are very clever and have a much more developed sense of smell than ours, you most likely do not want to know about these drugs. To fool you We will mix your dose of syrup or the chopped tablet in your favorite food (better if it is moist). This way he will surely swallow it without realizing it  .

In this way, your dog's health will remain in good condition, even when you are in the park.
