The Mites that affect the ears of dogs are called Otodectes cynotis, and they are very common among puppies. They feed on epidermal and wax debris, causing what is known as ear scabies. It causes annoying symptoms such as itching or a bad smell, but if we do not remedy it in time it can lead to hearing loss.
We will notice that our dog's ears are infected by these mites because the animal will not stop scratching and shaking the head, due to the intense itching they produce. The ears will turn red and some scabs will appear, although the latter can also be a symptom of other conditions. In addition, there may be a dark brown waxy discharge that gives off a bad smell, as well as small bruises and alopecia in the area.
To end this problem we will need the veterinarian intervention. You first have to diagnose it by examining a sample of earwax through a microscope or with a magnifying glass. This way you can distinguish the presence of these mites, which appear as small white dots in continuous movement. However, sometimes looking inside the ear with an otoscope is enough.
Treatment is based on the use of the appropriate products, which must be prescribed by the specialist. We have to apply ear canal cleaners of the dog, as many times as indicated by the veterinarian. In this way, the mites will not be able to take refuge among the remains of wax and the medicines will be able to access and destroy them.
After cleaning, pour the acaricidal prescribed by the expert and likely to contain pyrethrins y thiabendazole. We must always do it following the veterinarian's instructions. It is essential that we complete the treatment to completely eliminate the infection, and that we check the other pets that live with us, since mites are highly contagious.
During the process, these insects will escape from the dog's ears to settle in other areas of its body, causing itching. Therefore, it is important that we bathe the dog with some special shampoo against mites; the vet will tell us which is the right product and the frequency of baths. Likewise, we will have to thoroughly clean the house and the accessories used by the animal (food plate, its bed, collar, etc.).
